About this product
Sunflower seeds: long, pointed at both ends, in black-grey shells edged with pale stripes, with the soft grey kernel inside. Heaped in a bowl they look like a pile of black and white stripes, and anyone who grew up in Damascus knows them at a glance.
Taste
It is all in the cracking: seed between the teeth, a snap of the shell, and out comes a light, gently rich kernel. One leads to the next until the handful is gone.
How to enjoy it
The seed for TV evenings, match nights, picnics and drives, always with a little dish beside it for shells that fills faster than you expect. In winter it gets cracked around the stove, in summer on the balcony or in the garden.
How to store it
Keep the bag or tin tightly closed, because damp shells go soft and refuse to crack cleanly; if that happens, toss them in a dry pan over low heat for a few minutes and they snap again.
